Rob Smith is an American political commentator, author, and decorated U.S. Army veteran known for his outspoken conservative views, particularly as a Black, gay Republican challenging identity politics and promoting free speech. He served five years as an infantryman with two deployments to the Middle East, earning the Army Commendation Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and qualification as an Expert Marksman during Operation Iraqi Freedom. An early advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in the military, Smith was a key activist in the successful campaign to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in 2011. In 2018, he made headlines with a viral Daily Mail profile where he "came out" as a conservative and Trump supporter. He joined Turning Point USA as a Senior Contributor, has appeared on over 150 national and international TV segments, and published his bestselling memoir Always a Soldier: Service, Sacrifice, and Coming Out as America's Favorite Black, Gay Republican in 2020. As of 2025, he identifies as a "right-leaning independent" and runs Rob Smith Media as CEO.
