Rob Smith Biography

Rob Smith is an American political commentator, author, and decorated U.S. Army veteran known for his outspoken conservative views, particularly as a Black, gay Republican challenging identity politics and promoting free speech. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Smith enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school, serving five years as an infantryman with two deployments to the Middle East. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, he earned the Army Commendation Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and qualification as an Expert Marksman.

An early advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in the military, Smith was a key activist in the successful campaign to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in 2011, allowing openly gay and lesbian service members to serve. He publicly came out as gay to his family and close friends during his military service. In 2018, Smith made headlines with a viral Daily Mail profile where he “came out” as a conservative and Trump supporter, describing the backlash from progressive circles—including racial slurs and social ostracism—as more painful than his coming out as gay. He has often quipped that revealing his political beliefs was “harder than coming out as gay.

“Smith’s rise in conservative media began shortly after, when he joined Turning Point USA as a Senior Contributor under founder Charlie Kirk. There, he spearheaded digital communications initiatives targeting Gen-Z conservatives, amassing millions of engagements during the 2020 and 2024 Trump campaigns. A frequent Fox News contributor and in-demand speaker, he has appeared on over 150 national and international TV segments and delivered talks on politics, culture, and personal development at venues like Yale University, Google, Vanderbilt University, Deutsche Bank, and Goldman Sachs.

In 2020, Smith published his bestselling memoir, Always a Soldier: Service, Sacrifice, and Coming Out as America’s Favorite Black, Gay Republican, which blends his Iraq War experiences with a critique of “outrage culture” and identity politics. The book, nominated for awards, earned praise from figures like Dave Rubin and Charlie Kirk for its raw honesty and patriotic fervor.

With a massive online following exceeding 1.7 million across platforms like X (@RobSmithOnline), Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, Smith runs Rob Smith Media as CEO, focusing on content creation, brand consulting for nonprofits and corporations navigating DEI challenges, and unfiltered commentary on current events. His style—blunt, humorous, and “no BS”—has positioned him as a bridge-builder in conservative circles, emphasizing American exceptionalism and individual liberty over division.

However, Smith’s journey took a pivotal turn in March 2024, when he announced his departure from the Republican Party after being heckled with racist and homophobic slurs by MAGA supporters at a conservative event in Phoenix. Citing betrayal by the party’s MAGA wing, he now identifies as a “right-leaning independent” but continues advocating for conservative principles on issues like free speech and veteran support. As of 2025, he remains a prominent voice in political discourse, collaborating selectively with Republicans while critiquing extremism on all sides.
