Is the 2nd Amendment Under Attack?

The 2nd amendment has been a controversial issue for many decades in our country. Recently however, many people believe that the right to bear arms is being purposely restricted by imposing so many laws and restrictions that essentially the 2nd amendment no longer exists.

Advocates of strict gun laws claim that the violence and murder rate in our country is excessively high and is due to a society with a fanatical gun culture where criminals have easy access to guns.

Here are some stats about firearms that support their view:

• There have been at least 61 mass murders carried out in the past 3 decades by legally obtained firearms.
• The Harvard Injury Control Research Center assessed the literature on guns and homicide and found that there’s substantial evidence that indicates more guns means more murders.
• The United States has roughly half the deaths due to assault than it did 40 years ago. Perhaps due to stricter gun laws.
• 85% of American Citizens support background checks for private and gun show sales
• 80% of American Citizens support preventing people with mental illness from purchasing guns.

On the other hand, gun owners believe that we are safer with a high percentage of gun ownership among responsible citizens. They state that this curbs gun violence, as the bad guys are afraid to commit crimes when they know gun owners could be near by.

Here are some stats about gun ownership that supports their view:

• There are approx. 270 Million Civilian Firearms in the United States
• 3/5 of polled felons say they won’t mess with an armed victim
• United States has the highest gun ownership rate in the world: 88.8 per 100 residents. Yemen is second with 54.8 per 100 residents. Yet, Honduras has the highest intentional homicide rate at 91.6 per 100,000 residents. The United States is 103 at 4.8 per 100,000 residents.
• All except 1 mass shooting in the United States has occurred in gun free zones
• The 9 European nations with the lowest gun ownership rate have a combined murder rate 3x that of the 9 European nations with the highest gun ownership rate.
• A recent study published in the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy concluded that there is a negative correlation between gun ownership and violent crime in countries internationally (more guns = less crime)
